Speech by Gastón Soublette inaugurated the IV Congress on International and Interdisciplinary Cultural Heritage in Concepción
The “IV Congress on International and Interdisciplinary Cultural Heritage: Industrial Heritage, Social Issues and Challenges for the New Governance” began yesterday at the Mural Hall of the Biobío Regional Government headquarters, together with 20 national and international speakers.
The event is organized by the Creasur Cultural Center, financed by the Regional Government of Biobío and supported by Nudisur, and will be held until Thursday, October 19 at the Regional Government Headquarters in Concepción, where multiple knowledge will be shared on the valorization and rescue of heritage.
The opening day was marked by the online speech of the philosopher and National Prize for Humanities and Social Sciences 2023 Gaston Soublette, who spoke about the “Revaluation and protection of heritage in Chile”.
In addition, a panel discussion was held on “Downs, counterpoints and proposals.” which introduced the main questions that encompass the issue of Industrial Heritage in Chile and Latin America and was led by Consuelo Figueroa of the Universidad Diego Portales, Pablo Aravena Núñez of the Universidad de Valparaíso and Juliana Fassa of the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina.
On the other hand, speakers from Chile, Argentina, France, Venezuela, Germany and Indonesia shared their experiences on industrial heritage through the presentations “Local and community realities, diverse in Chile”, “Mining heritage and its recognition by UNESCO” and “Latin American experiences in industrial heritage”.
“This congress is a relevant milestone, since we are bringing people from TICCIH (International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage), which is an international institution that provides academic advice for Unesco nominations, and there are also several people from Icomos, as well as participants from Egypt, Indonesia, India, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, France, people who work in this area – industrial heritage – from different disciplines”.said María Esperanza Rock Núñez, director of the Strategies for the Transformation of Industrial Heritage into Regional Assets program.
In parallel to the congress, the “Festival de Arte en Ruinas” (Art in Ruins Festival) was launched as part of the program “Transformación del Patrimonio Industrial en Activo Regional” financed by the Biobío regional government, which will accompany the presentations and activities of the congress.
The festival seeks to be a platform for local creators, promoting the appreciation and understanding of the intangible cultural heritage that shapes the identity of Biobío through various artistic disciplines such as music, theater, dance, crafts, textile art and performances.
In this context, the Calaucalis Collective performed a dance presentation with an excerpt from the work “Gente de la Aurora Oscura”, which has its axis in Lota, its people and its history, revealing even more today its intuitive notion of heritage.

The IV International and Interdisciplinary Congress on Cultural Heritage promises to be an enriching event and will continue to bring together heritage experts and enthusiasts from around the world until October 20, fostering dialogue and collaboration in the preservation and management of cultural heritage.
